Hunters Point Shipyard
702 acres east of United States Route 101 in southeastern San Francisco
Built c1930s
Brief History:
Hunters Point Shipyard is located within the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood, in southeastern San Francisco. Originally, Hunters Point was a commercial shipyard established in 1870, consisting of two graving docks purchased and built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century by the Union Iron Works company, later owned by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Company and named Hunters Point Drydocks, located at Potrero Point. From World War II until 1974, the 500-acre Shipyard was a major source of jobs for the community, employing up to 17,000 people at its peak.
Current Project Background:
The Project proposed by Lennar Urban includes a mixed-use community with a wide range of residential, retail, office, research and development, civic and community uses, and parks and recreational open space. This redevelopment would require the removal of multiple identified historic resources. A major component would be a new stadium for the San Francisco 49ers. Additionally, new transportation and utility infrastructure would serve the Project including a bridge across Yosemite Slough. The Project includes amendments of the Bayview Hunters Point and Hunters Point Shipyard Redevelopment Plans, and amendments of the San Francisco General Plan and Planning Code.
Heritage Position:
On January 10, 2010, Heritage issued comments on the DEIR. We found it inadequate in the following areas relating to historic resources: evaluation of the historic resources present on the site, analysis of the impacts to the historic resources, a preservation alternative that meets the project goals, and mitigation measures to lessen impacts on the historic resources. See the full comment letter below.
