Heritage Happy Hour is a convivial “no-host” gathering of heritage professionals, young preservationists, aficionados, friends, and Legacy Business cohorts interested in safeguarding San Francisco’s unique architectural and cultural identity. We get together on the Second Thursday of each month from 5-7 pm at a registered Legacy Business bar or restaurant in San Francisco.
Located in the South of Market in the Leather and LGBTQ Cultural District, Lone Star Saloon is a neighborhood bar established in 1989. It was founded by Rick Redewell, who envisioned a space where working class, blue collar gay men could gather and be celebrated. Today, it is known as the bar associated with the emergence of bear culture in the 1980s-1990s, and its importance to the local LGBTQ+ community and the bar community cannot be overstated.
The bar was originally located on Howard Street before extensive damage from the Loma Prieta Earthquake caused the Lone Star Saloon to relocate to its present location on Harrison Street.
Like SOMA Leather and LGBTQ+ bars and nightclubs Oasis, Powerhouse, SF Eagle, The EndUp, The Stud, and others, Lone Star is a longtime cultural gathering space and legacy business in the cultural district, and is a hub for bear-related organizations, groups, and community events.
Lone Star Saloon joined the Legacy Business Registry in 2016.
