TOURS
Haas-Lilienthal
House Tour
As
featured on A&E's America's Castles' series Castles by
the Bay copyright 1991, Richard Sexton. The Haas-Lilienthal
House, (Peter Schmidt, Architect) is at 2007 Franklin Street, (between
Washington & Jackson) in San Francisco. This exuberant Queen Anne-style
Victorian was built in 1886. It is the only intact private home
of the period that is open regularly as a museum, complete with
authentic furniture and artifacts. The House has elaborate wooden
gables, a circular corner tower and luxurant ornamentation. Volunteer
docents lead tours through the House and explain the Victorian architecture
of the exterior. A display of photographs in the downstairs supper-room
describes the history of the home and the family that lived here
until 1972. To learn more about the house, click here.

Saturday Walking Tours
SF Heritage is delighted to offer 4 public walking tours, given on Saturdays at 1:30. Each tour covers ~15-20 blocks and takes about 2 hours. These 4 tours will be given on a rotating basis, on Saturdays at 1:30, as follows:
- FIRST SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH:
“City Beautiful to Civic Center” Tour
This walk is the flattest of the 4 new walks, and is a comprehensive exploration of the Civic Center Historic District - one of the finest ensembles of Beaux Arts architecture in America - and why that style prevails there. In addition to the many beautiful buildings, this tour also covers quite a bit of public artwork. This tour (only) does NOT start at the Haas-Lilienthal House, and so requires reservations. THIS TOUR HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
- SECOND SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH:
“A Walk Along Broadway” visits the area north and west of the Haas-Lilienthal House, covering a number of Victorian styles of houses along Broadway (including the “Mrs. Doubtfire” house) and numerous stunning Classical Revival buildings, including 2 of Silver King James Flood’s former mansions. This tour starts at the Haas-Lilienthal House, and ends elsewhere.THIRD SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH:
“Beyond Union Street: A Walk Through Cow Hollow”
This walking tour explores the early years of Cow Hollow through the distinctive architecture of the neighborhood, including early dairy farms, roadway inns, converted stables and barns, the exteriors of Victorian houses and mansions, and the grand art deco apartment buildings that replaced them. The walk showcases residential and commercial architectural styles from the 1850s to the 1920s. This tour starts at the Haas-Lilienthal House, and ends elsewhere.
- FOURTH SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH:
“Walk the Fire Line: Van Ness Avenue”
This stroll down to and along Van Ness Avenue, skirts the 1906 fire line, and offers marvelous post-1906 architecture along and east of Van Ness Avenue, as well as a few outstanding pre-quake survivors on the western side. We address the earthquake and fire, and the subsequent effects on the area, which evolved from being a grand residential boulevard to a high-style commercial row created to showcase that latest of modern conveniences, the automobile. This tour starts at the Haas-Lilienthal House, and ends elsewhere.
Tour prices is the same as for all our other tours:
- Free for members $8 general admission
- $5 for seniors & children aged 12 & under.
Layered clothing and comfortable walking shoes are recommended, but these tours have been designed with limited uphill portions, and the pace is comfortable for most people. Water will be available. Reservations required for the Saturday Civic Center walking tour only – please contact Shelley at 415/ 441.3000 x24 or email Shelley Adams.
