On April 18, 1906, James Stetson was at his home on 1801 Van Ness Avenue— two blocks from SF Heritage’s headquarters at the Haas-Lilienthal House— when he was “awakened by a very severe shock of earthquake” that nearly threw him out of bed. He recorded in vivid detail his next few days walking the city past notable landmarks—Lotta’s Fountain, Old St. Mary’s Cathedral, Pacific Union Club, Lafayette Square— and his encounters with people he knew along the way.
Join San Francisco Heritage virtually on 6-7 pm on Friday, April 18, 2025, for a special evening program commemorating one of the most cataclysmic events in San Francisco history as seen through one man’s eyes.
Woody LaBounty (SF Heritage President & CEO) and David Gallagher, former hosts of the popular Outside Lands San Francisco podcast, will act as your tour guides for Stetson’s journey, reading excerpts and showing historical views of important sites before, during, and after the disaster.
