In partnership with legacy business Arion Press and the San Francisco Symphony’s Community Engagement Program, San Francisco Heritage hosted a special event on August 21, 2022 for beloved and honored members of our “Lilienthal Society,” which represents past board and staff members of SF Heritage who have continued to advocate on behalf of the city’s historic and cultural resources.
We celebrated two new inductees at this special event, Nancy Gille and Douglas Tom, FAIA, both of whom served on the Board of Directors of SF Heritage and continue to be actively engaged with our organization.
Guests were treated to a tour of Arion Press’s working facility in the Presidio of San Francisco, where the business produces beautiful, limited edition handprinted fine artist books. Arion Press’s work is supported by the non-profit Grabhorn Institute, designated an “irreplaceable cultural treasure” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Institute houses an extensive and historically significant collection of metal typefaces and associated ornamental cuts, and supports the only paid apprenticeship program in typecasting, letterpress printing and bookbinding in the country.
Lilienthal Society members also experienced an incredible musical performance by SF Symphony bassist Charles Chandler and cellist Amos Yang, who shared histories of their instruments (dating from the 17th and 18th centuries) and the composers of the music they played.
Thank you to our partners and Lilienthal Society members for this wonderful event!
