On Saturday, October 8, San Francisco Heritage hosted Salon & Speakeasy 2022, a very special edition of our annual Soirée celebration, for 125 business, community, and philanthropic leaders and supporters. Held at SF Heritage’s Queen Anne landmark, the Haas-Lilienthal House, the event celebrated the special places and faces of San Francisco through a festive culinary, music, spoken word and performing arts program.
With in-person programming tabled for most of the pandemic, this event was an opportunity to not only bring people back into our beautiful historic property, but to emphasize SF Heritage’s artistic and cultural partnerships tied to our mission. Salon & Speakeasy showcased San Francisco legacy businesses, a key part of our advocacy work: Kathy Fang of Fang Restaurant and House of Nanking provided small plate dinner service and a culinary demonstration; Joe Goode Performance Group recreated a special segment from their 2018 performance “Still Standing” (originally performed and choreographed at the Haas-Lilienthal House); South of Market-based screen-printing shop Babylon Burning provided branded tote bags for guests; and Dianda’s Bakery provided a wide array of colorful cookies for dessert.
The evening also featured artistic partnerships associated with our work at the Doolan-Larson Building: Artist Calixto Robles, long associated with Mission District landmark Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts (currently popping up at 1506 Haight Street), created a one-of-a-kind screenprint for guests, and former SF Heritage artists-in-residence Ben Juodvalkis and Chibueze Crouch performed moving pieces of music and poetry as part of the evening’s program.
After a fund-a-need for San Francisco Heritage led by auctioneer Paul Kelly, we closed out our special evening with music and dancing from famed swing and blues performers Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers in our decked-out “speakeasy” ballroom.
The event utilized the many spaces of the Haas-Lilienthal House and gave the opportunity for both old and new friends to reconnect: the front parlors, dining room, and the back patio for short performances, food, and conversation, and the ballroom for our fund-a-need and music and dancing. Overall, the event raised over $100,000 in support of the vital work and impact of San Francisco Heritage in safeguarding and enhancing San Francisco’s unique built and cultural identity.
Thank you to Drew Altizer Photography for capturing our special event! Please visit their website to view more photos and to purchase prints.
And we want to send a big thank you to our board of directors and its event/advancement committee, our staff led by Moira Dowell and Ashley Wright, our volunteers, our legacy business partners and performers, and friends of SF Heritage for making this a successful event!
