For many years, SF Heritage has, in partnership with community members like advocate Richard Rothman and District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar, worked to preserve and protect the Delia Fleishhacker Memorial Building, commonly known as the Mothers Building. Built in 1925 and today standing within the grounds of the San Francisco Zoo, the site is imbued with women’s history and artistic achievement. In September 2022, the Board of Supervisors approved landmark designation for the site (SF Landmark no. 304). In 2026, funding and identifying a primary use continue to present challenges to revisioning and reopening this significant site.
