In July 2021, San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors unanimously supported the creation of a new Sunset Chinese Cultural District (SCCD), the first cultural district dedicated to place-making and place-keeping for San Francisco’s Chinese community and the only cultural district on the city’s west side. SF Heritage quickly stepped up as one of SCCD’s community planning partners.
The new Sunset Chinese Cultural District working group, initiated by District 4 Supervisor Gordon Mar, is actively engaged in laying the groundwork for the cultural district and its goals of fostering cultural and economic vitality in the Sunset’s Chinese American community. The latter has had a significant presence in the Sunset for decades; however, this is the first time that the community has come together across businesses, nonprofits, health and social services, faith-based, arts and other groups, to collaborate.
The working group introduced the new cultural district to neighbors at the in-person Sunset Community Festival in October 2021 and Lunar New Year Market in February 2022, and look ahead to a full-scale launch in May 2022 under the stewardship of legacy business Wah Mei School.
